What is Shoulder Instability?

Shoulder instability is a problem that occurs when the structures that surround the glenohumeral joint do not work to maintain the ball within its socket. If the joint is too loose, it may slide partially out of place. If the joint comes completely out of place, this is called a shoulder dislocation. Patients with shoulder instability often complain of an uncomfortable sensation that their shoulder may be about to slide out of place.

Symptoms of Shoulder Instability

 

  • Pain
  • Repeated shoulder dislocations
  • Repeated instances of the shoulder giving out

  • Shoulder Dislocation
  • Repetitive Strain

What is Glenoid Labrum Injury?

The glenoid labrum is a fibrous ring of tissue which attaches to the rim of the glenoid. The glenoid labrum increases the depth of the shoulder cavity making the shoulder joint more stable. The glenohumeral ligaments and shoulder capsule attach to the glenoid labrum.


Symptoms of Glenoid Labrum Injury

  • Pain is made worse by overhead activities
  • Weakness
  • Instability in the shoulder
  • Tenderness

 


Causes of Glenoid Larum Injury

  • Repetitive overhead throwing
  • Catching heavy objects
  • Falling onto an outstretched arm

What is Burners and Stingers?

Burners and stingers are common injuries in contact sports. A burner or a stinger is an injury to the nerve supply of the upper arm around the shoulder area. The injury is named for the stinging or burning pain that spreads from the shoulder to the hand.

  • Burning or electric shock sensation
  • Arm numbness and weakness
  • Warm sensation

What is Weightlifer’s Shoulder?

Weightlifter’s shoulder is a painful deterioration of the distal end of the clavicle (collar bone). It is an overuse phenomenon that causes tiny fractures along the end of the clavicle. A breakdown of the bone occurs.
