Sternoclavicular Joint Injury

Sternoclavicular Joint Injury

What is Sternoclavicular Joint Injury?

The sternoclavicular joint can dislocate from its normal position. The clavicle will either dislocate in front (an anterior SC dislocation) or behind (a posterior SC dislocation). The posterior SC dislocations are more worrisome because of the important structures that are just behind the sternum.

Symptoms of Sternoclavicular Joint Injury

Anterior Dislocation:

  • Usually can see the dislocated end of the clavicle
  • Pain and swelling

Posterior Dislocation:

  • Subtle dimpling of the skin over the joint
  • Pain and swelling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Painful swallowing
  • Abnormal pulses

  • Treatment for Sternoclavicular Joint Injury

  • Sling
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Surgerical Treatment

  • Self-Diagnose can bring more harm than treating it. It is good to know more about the injury but definitely not to the point of self-treatment.
